At DELTA Safety Training, we regularly give you a peek behind the scenes and introduce you to our colleagues. This time, we’re learning all about Tim, and he’s giving us a glimpse into his daily work at our training center. He’s also sharing a fun fact that no one knew yet… but that we’ve actually heard before. Curious to find out more? Then read on!
Tim “It felt like coming home”
Tim first heard about DST about five years ago from a close friend who was taking a course there. At the time, he was working as an educational counselor in the healthcare sector, but he realized he was ready for something new. That’s not surprising, considering he had previously lived on Bonaire for four and a half years and taught diving lessons there; adventure is clearly in his blood. When he saw a promotional video for DST, he was immediately sold. He applied for a position as an assistant trainer and enthusiastically dove into the world of safety training.
After a brief stint with another employer, Tim quickly realized that the grass wasn’t greener there after all. The variety, the interaction with students, and—above all—his great coworkers drew him back to DST. “It really felt like coming home.”
What do you like about working at DELTA Safety Training?
According to Tim, DST stands out because of its short lines of communication, close-knit team, and perfect balance between working independently and collaborating. The atmosphere is friendly, familiar, and supportive. Colleagues are always there for one another, and in addition to working hard, there’s plenty of room for spontaneous conversations, table tennis tournaments, get-togethers, BBQs, and fun, active outings.
From Assistant Trainer to Trainer
Tim now leads various training courses and has advanced to the role of trainer. He particularly enjoys the onshore training courses because he gets to see trainees grow and progress toward the exam throughout the entire program. He prefers to make theory practical, fun, and interactive. Courses such as forklift, aerial work platform, and breathing air are his favorites, precisely because he can help trainees truly understand difficult topics in all sorts of ways.
What gives Tim the most energy? Enthusiastic students. “If someone says at the end of the day, ‘I had a great time, and I learned something, too, ’ then my day was a success.”
He enjoys finding the right way to explain things, and humor is his secret weapon. He eventually gets even the quietest groups on board. “You can’t approach everyone the same way. I always try to stay true to myself and win people over with enthusiasm and humor.” Tim has grown especially in self-confidence and patience. Standing in front of different groups has taught him to constantly adapt his communication to the people he’s addressing. He now also sees dealing with a variety of personalities as a wonderful challenge.
The unexpected dive happens again...
We now know someone (Gileine) who once took an unexpected dive while at work.
While cleaning the skimmers, Tim was completely focused on his task. Everything was going according to plan—until gravity decided to intervene. Before he knew it, he was lying in the pool—clothes and all.
And guess what... During this interview, it turned out that Gileine had gone through exactly the same thing. She, too, had once fallen into the water while cleaning , fully clothed.
The best part? They had never heard this from each other.
When the subject came up, they looked at each other with that look that said, “Seriously? You, too?” Then came a fit of laughter that was almost louder than the splash itself.
