From a pet store to DELTA Safety Training: a career change full of new energy
At DELTA Safety Training, we regularly give you a behind-the-scenes look and introduce you to our colleagues. This time, we’ll learn all about Gileine, and she’ll give us a glimpse into her day-to-day work at our training center.
Gileine: “I didn’t even know this kind of work existed”
Sometimes a career takes a completely different turn than you had imagined. That’s certainly true for Gileine. While her heart had been with animals for years, she discovered a whole new world through a former colleague. She has now been working as an assistant trainer at DELTA Safety Training for over three and a half years and feels completely at home there.
How did you end up at DELTA Safety Training, anyway?
“I used to work at a pet store because I have a huge passion for animals. Still, I missed the atmosphere there and working as part of a close-knit team. Through a former coworker, Toyah, I came into contact with DELTA Safety Training. I spent a day shadowing them first, and I actually liked it right away. The funny thing is, I had no idea this kind of work even existed.”
What started as a job shadowing day turned into an entirely new career path. From being an emergency response team member at a pet store to now leading the training sessions herself. As an emergency response trainer and LOTUS victim, Gileine helps others prepare for unexpected situations. In addition, Gileine ensures that everything runs smoothly when it comes to logistical tasks.
No two days at DST are the same.
After the morning briefing, every workday looks different, and it’s precisely that variety that energizes her.
From setting up training equipment to cleaning up afterward: Gileine takes care of it all. Whether she’s assisting with a pool training session or tidying up the site after a fire drill, she switches effortlessly between her various tasks.
What she enjoys most is when trainees leave with more self-confidence or tell her afterward that the training really helped them. Even as a LOTUS “victim,” she finds great satisfaction in making the scenarios as realistic as possible. Sometimes serious, sometimes with a touch of humor. “In some scenarios, for example, I have to act angry. That’s totally out of character for me, so the participants are often completely surprised.”
What makes working at DELTA Safety Training so enjoyable?
According to Gileine, what makes DST special is the atmosphere. Even though it’s a relatively small team, it feels like a close-knit group where people work hard but also laugh a lot. Team outings, barbecues, toast time, and the shared sense of humor are an important part of that. She also appreciates that everyone is always there for one another. “Everyone has their own area of expertise, so you can always turn to one another for help.”
From Confidence to Impact
Don’t worry—this helicopter crash is all part of the experience! 🚁 Chances are you know Gileine from this. During the OPITO Helicopter Escape Training, she guides participants through the spectacular cage rotation. But the best part? Seeing how nervousness gives way to confidence and wrapping up the day with a personal chat and a well-deserved certificate.
She has also made great strides on a personal level. By teaching classes every day, she has become more confident and has gained a great deal of knowledge in various fields. Outside of work, she loves spending time with family and friends, or she can be found in the garden as soon as the weather is nice.
For people considering applying for a job at DST, she has a clear message: “If you’re positive, enthusiastic, flexible, and eager to learn, you’ll have every opportunity here to develop yourself.” If she had to describe DST in three words, she would choose: professionalism, knowledge, and friendliness.
Even my coworkers might not know this yet...
Everyone goes through something uncomfortable from time to time. Gileine, too.
“I was cleaning the skimmers, which are located at the edge of the pool. When I went to put the grates back in place, my foot slipped and I fell into the water with all my clothes and my phone.”
Fortunately, she can laugh about it now. And so can we.
