At DELTA Safety Training, we see more and more organisations taking steps towards creating a strong safety culture. Working safely means more than just complying with laws and regulations. Andreas Gerrets, Learning and Development Specialist at Koole Terminals, understands this like no other. Every day, he works to increase the safety awareness of the employees at the terminals by developing a training programme that is in line with practical needs. The (work) processes within Koole Terminals are mapped in order to attune training to these processes. Where existing training does not connect well with practice, a customised training is developed. In collaboration with Koole Terminals, we have developed the custom Hoist Training. In this article, Andreas explains how the training contributes to a safer working environment.

Training in daily practice
After years of operational experience in the world of tank storage, Andreas knows how important it is to be able to work safely. As the person responsible for Learning & Development, he is always looking for ways to further increase safety. For him, safe working goes much further than simply ensuring that you are 'compliant '. After the successful establishment of the Koole Academy, where employees have 24/7 access to course material and can train when it suits them best, there was a need for practical training courses that are geared to the day-to-day working situations within Koole Terminals.

Andreas: "As an employer, you are obliged to facilitate training that ensures that employees have the necessary knowledge to work safely with machines, for example. However, what you often see is that many training courses are rather static. There is a standard package and that's it. At Koole we felt the need to take this a step further and tailor training courses to the everyday practical situations at the various terminals. We are examining which activities we perform as an organisation and how we can better embed these activities in training processes. We want people to look at their work in a different way, for example, taking into account the context in which they perform these activities. If you carry out activities at a certain location, they will have an impact on the environment."

Custom Hoist Training
According to Andreas, it is important to work with parties who can be flexible and put the customer first, in order to be able to offer employees tailor-made training. With this wish as a starting point, we started working with Andreas and his team to develop the custom Hoist Training.

Andreas: "At Koole we are striving for a standardised norm with regard to the training on offer and the work processes. The training courses must be able to be carried out at all terminals and always meet the same high quality."

In consultation with the HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environment, Quality) department, a scope has been drawn up in which, among other things, the quality standards and content have been determined. DELTA Safety Training's team then set to work on developing an e-learning training programme. This curriculum has been added to the Koole Academy.

Andreas: "By having the theoretical content developed by DELTA Safety Training, Koole was certain that the theory would comply with all legislation and regulations. In addition, this form has also been chosen from a practical point of view. A regular training course, in which theory and practice are offered on the same day, quickly takes up a day. At Koole that time is often not available. Because the students can follow the theory when they want, we can be more flexible when it comes to practical training. In this way we can work in a planned way and organise training processes more efficiently."

Practical approach
The online curriculum was completed at the end of 2020, after which development of the practical training started. During a first test training, which took place in the first quarter of 2021, random input from the participants was collected and evaluated. Adjustments were made immediately and the training was optimised within a short period of time.

Andreas: "We see the lessons in our Academy and our practical training courses as a dynamic offering. When laws and regulations change, but also when internal processes change, we adapt the training content."

Flexible partnership
The development of the training course took place during the coronavirus outbreak and was carried out under particularly challenging conditions.

Andreas: "What I find very strong about DELTA Safety Training is how they anticipate the changing market. For me, it's important to get as much added value out of a training course as possible. For example, it's not only important that participants are certified, but we also use trend analyses to make clear where we can improve. Many other parties are much more static in offering training and here, I feel, the customer is much less central. For us, it is important that training parties are flexible and agile. This model is particularly successful. DELTA Safety Training has been a good choice in this respect."

Next steps
Now that the development and implementation of the Hoist Training has been successful, Andreas is already working on the next steps. At the moment we are working on the further introduction of 'carousel training' in which small groups receive flexible training.

Andreas: "The introduction of carousel training was already in the planning, but has been accelerated by the outbreak of the coronavirus. It just goes to show that challenging circumstances also create opportunities. In the short term, we are working on offering a wider range of training courses to our employees in this way. I also have various ideas about the next customised training courses that we want to develop in collaboration with DELTA Safety Training."
